Product Description

Introducing the HEM15, the latest addition to iOptron’s revolutionary hybrid strain wave drive mounts. This light weight tiny titans will deliver an astronomy experience like never before. With a mount head weighing 5.5lbs, it can carry an 18 lbs payload without needing a counterweight. Applying iOptron’s multi-decade experience creating precision mounts, the HEM15 brings this vision to reality.

Utilizing state of the art strain wave drive technology for the RA movement in tandem with backlash-free DEC worm/belt drive design, the HEM15 delivers unparalleled weight to payload efficiency. Its black anodized all metal CNC machined body is not only appealing to the eye, it’s a rugged platform that will perform at the highest level for many years to come. Unique features such as an electronic friction break and power down memory allow the mount safely stop and resume a GoTo slew or continue tracking even after an abrupt power loss (No need to realign and start from the beginning).

A HEM15 mount can be controlled by a computer, either via ASCOM/Commander for a Windows PC or a third party INDI driver for a MacOS software; a SmartPhone/Tablet via iOptron Commander Lite or an App like SkySafari; or a Raspberry Pi device via INDI driver.

HEM15 Nice Compact Mount

I've used the HEM15 a few times now and overall it has performed well. I have my GT81 IV, ASI294MC Pro, with a ZWO OAG and QHY5III678m as the guide camera, a ZWO EAF, ZWO EFW (5x2) and a mini pc mounted on top running N.I.N.A. The equipment weight is below the 7kg payload capacity and it has been working well with guiding usually just at or slightly above 1 arc second. I have another harmonic drive mount and I noticed that if I throw a counter weight on it the guiding improves very slightly by 0.2 or 0.3 arc sec. I tried the same with HEM15 and I had the same result guiding improved slightly. Things I like: the mount is very compact and light, slewing is almost silent, it also comes in a nice case. Things that could be improved: it could use a usb port on the mount instead of having to plug into the handset, a better saddle and a more well thought out tightening **** (it has to be positioned to the up position or it will get damaged during slewing if left in the down position). Things that are nice to have but not essential: the iPolar, it's nice and does the job but it's another cable and piece of software. Sharpcap or N.I.N.A's three point polar alignment work well. Overall however iOptron have done a nice job with this mount the hybrid approach works well. I'm giving it four stars as I think there are a couple of things that could be improved, but if I were travelling I would happily take this little beast along.
